Abundance Abounds

Abundance Abounds
by Eva Gregory, CPCC

Does wealth mean monetary success? Or can it mean more than just money? When one speaks of wealth, the natural inclination is to assume money is being referred to. But there are so many other things in life than just money. One can have an abundance of friends, time, good health, personal success, wisdom, or a multitude of other things that is not primarily associated with money.

It is said that the wealth and success of the world of controlled by a mere ten-percent of the population. Thus, should it be assumed that there is no more than what those in the “ten-percent” control, and the rest of us should throw up our hands in futility? That ninety-percent of the population should just be happy with what we have because there is no more available to us? Thankfully, the Universe does not put such limitations on us. Abundance truly does abound.

Too many people assume that if someone has a great deal of wealth it means that someone else has to make do with less. As if there is only a certain amount of success or wealth to go around that is stockpiled somewhere and once it’s depleted, that’s it. But that’s not how it works. Consciousness is at the root of everything. Abundance, wealth, success and prosperity are created and there is no limit on how much is available.

Think of new products that come into the market. Many change the way the world operates, but just because a different product or manufacturer comes onto the scene, does not always mean that another has to go under to make room for the new arrival. The same is true for the other facets of life, as Ralph learned. Ralph fancied himself an inventor. He hadn’t come up with “the” big idea or patent yet, but he was hopeful, that is, until his neighbor Stan came up with an idea and began to work on his very own patent. Ralph began to lose hope that he’d ever make it as an inventor. After all, what were the odds that two neighbors would both patent ideas that would bring them great success? Tired of all of his recent negativity, Ralph’s wife gave him a pep talk. She told him that she loved him, supported his ingenuity and had great faith in his abilities. She also told him that he’d be foolish to base the possibility of his success on someone else’s accomplishments. After all, it was like comparing apples to oranges. Imagine how far behind the world would be in all aspects, if everyone believed that there was only but so much available and once that imaginary quota was reached there was no more room for new ideas, advancements or opportunities. Ralph still hasn’t come up with his big invention, but after helping his neighbor through the patent process, Ralph recognized a need for his services, and opened his own patent consultancy business. His business is growing, and he believes that he will be successful.

Abundance is just that, plentiful. One must put the energy in place that there is enough of whatever is desired to go around. One is only as limited as one’s desire. The reality is that the boundary of abundance is infinite. Go ahead, grab yours!

One Bad Apple

One Bad Apple
By Eva Gregory, CPCC

Have you ever heard the expression that one bad apple can spoil the barrel? Unfortunately not only do many people believe this, but they actually live their lives by it.

What about all those good apples, don’t they count? Of course they do. Think back in your life. Do you define your childhood memories by success or losses? Do you remember all those A’s you made, or that one C or D in math. Think about this. Has that one bad grade defined who you are? I can remember a time when I was sharing with a very wise friend how I was struggling with a financial issue and told her, “I’m just no good in math.” Being the inquisitive person she is, she replied,” Why do you say that? You do fine handling your finances.”

I replied, “I have always had a problem with math. Ever since I can remember, I've been bad at math. My parents said it was because they switched schools mid-year in 2nd grade and I was a year behind the math class I was placed in.”
That was, of course, a huge general assumption. Because of one bad experience early on in my life, I had defined myself as being bad in math. “What about all those courses you took in accounting and business math?” she asked me. I replied that I had done well, actually, and yet that early memory of struggling in school had tainted my self concept! What an eye opener that was for me! Today, I look forward to working with numbers – especially my finances. It is an empowering feeling!

You are in the driver’s seat in your life. Only you can define who and what you are. No person or experience can define that for you, but how many times have you let failures rather than successes define who you are and what you can do. This can easily become a self-fulfilling prophecy. If you believe you are bad at something, then you actually set yourself up for further failure.

If on the other hand, when you concentrate on your successes, wondrous things can happen. This focus upon success also becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy and you begin to succeed. With every success you build confidence and create the life you really want. You have all the control, and with just a shift in perception and focus you can turn your life toward the path you always wanted.

So how do you do this? Well, you can begin right now. Think about this week. What successes have you had? Now they don’t have to big successes, they can be simple. For example, you made a great dinner for your family. You held the door for an elderly person. You got up and went to work this morning on time.

This might be awkward at first to think about. Failures have such a strong emotional punch to them that they can overshadow success. Set them aside and concentrate on those successes no matter how small. With practice, it will become more natural and easy. You will become your best cheerleader and motivator. Now the next part of this exercise is to write your successes down in a book every day.

When you feel failure begin to take over your thought process and becomes the focus in your life, take out and review your success book. How do you know you are allowing failure to dominate you? The first clue is how you interact with people and the language you use. When a person asks you how you are doing today and your immediate response is to relate to them about your failures - you’re sick, you’re tired, you’re angry, you got passed over for that promotion - you know that you need to refocus on your successes. Try to use your successes in your interactions. People will notice a change in you and you will actually start to feel better about yourself and where you are going on your life path.

Don’t let that one apple spoil everything. Just let it go and enjoy the sweetness of the good apples everyday.

Next Destination:Your Life

Next Destination: Your Life
By Eva Gregory, CPCC

“A journey of a thousand steps begins with just one step.”
-Confucius

Stephen R. Covey states in his book “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” that you must begin with the end in mind. What does that mean? It means that you must first establish a goal or a dream. Once you have this goal, you must envision yourself existing in that goal in the future. You must be able to see, feel, hear, taste, and smell it. You must be able to close your eyes and be there, in that moment in the future, to truly be able to step on the path that you will take you there.

Let’s say next week you decide you want to go on a trip for vacation. You load up the car, get the kids ready, you’ve stocked your cooler with drinks and snacks. Next you put on your seat belt, and start the car. You pull out of the driveway, and stop. Why did you stop? Well, where are you going? Do you have a map or an actual destination to go to? How can you go somewhere when you really haven’t decided where to go?

Now you could be one of those risk-taking pioneers of the road and leave it to chance. Wherever you arrive is where you arrive. That is the way a lot of people go through life. They just get in their car, and start driving without any real idea of where they are going or what it will be like when they get there. A lot of the time it is too late when you have arrived nowhere and your life is over.

So what is your next destination? When you plan a trip, usually you find it on a map, look at places to eat, hotels to stay at and attractions around your destination. When you form a goal in your life, it is much the same process. What will it look like when you get there? How much will it cost? How much do I need to save? How much time will it take to get to my destination?

Establishing a goal can be a stressful situation. What if it is the wrong goal, you might ask yourself? Or maybe, what if I can’t achieve it? The answer is you will achieve your goal, because you are the creator of your destiny. You have the power to make it happen. It does not matter where you are in your life. You can not change the past, but you do have the absolute power to shape and sculpt your future.

I have a colleague who plays the flute. He had played it for years and even studied it in college. He was worried about making money and so pursued a different career in counseling, but he still loved music. He always wanted to play on stage with a symphony orchestra. He continued to practice and played for his own enjoyment and to entertain his friends and family. What he really wanted to do was play in a symphony. He imagined what it would be like in front of all of those people applauding for him. He imagined the excitement of the curtain going up, playing his part and making beautiful music for others to enjoy. He kept the vision alive for years. Finally an opening in the local symphony came open. He practiced hard and auditioned. He gave me a CD of that symphony’s performance the other day. He was playing the flute as he had always dreamed of in the symphony. At the end of the recording I heard what he had heard that night, thunderous applause.

Once you step on that path for the journey you have selected, don’t look back. The only one who can stand in your way is you. If you feel doubt or fear along the way, close your eyes and remember that moment in the future. Bask in the experience of what it will be like when you arrive. See all of your friends and love ones there supporting you and patting you on the back, praising you, saying ”You made it!” Just place your foot upon the path. The next destination is the rest of your life.
